 1999 Georgia Science and Engineering Fair

For the past eight years, Gray's Reef has judged and awarded prizes to the top student science fair project at the State competition in Athens, GA. Awards are presented for the junior (grade 6-8) and senior (grade 9-12) levels for the best project in the marine sciences. This year the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary awards went to John Kowalchuk of Glynn Middle School for his project entitled "Does Industry Have an Impact on Local Marshes" and at the senior level to Krisda Chaiyachati and Emem Inyang Adolf for their project "Biodegradation Modeling--A study with Crude Oil and Microbial Interaction". In addition to the Gray's Reef award, Krisda and Emen were first place winners in the Environmental Division, recipients of the Georgia Marine Sciences Award and were selected trepresent the State at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Philadelphia, PA. John was also winner of the first place award from the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Society and the first place award from the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
